Day 2 - Marksburg Castle and Biergarten

In the morning we made our way to the Rhine River for a boat tour. The tour lasted an hour and we passed a few historical buildings one of which was the Koblenzer: the largest beer company in Koblenz. 





The boat took us to the foot of the Marksburg castle where we walked through the little town of Braubach. The houses were very medieval looking and the streets were very narrow. From the town, we started the mile-long hike up to the castle. 



The Marksburg castle was built during the twelfth century and has been occupied by six owners since then. In 1900 the castle was given over to the German Castle Association but two families are still living there today. Some features are original but most, like the gates and doorways, were altered over time. The gates were originally built big enough to fit a horse and rider but now they are filled in to a more practical size. The Marksburg castle was never conquered but it did have defensive aspects. We ate lunch at a small restaurant up by the castle which overlooked the Rhine River while also taking some time to visit the gift shop.



Next, we took the boat back and had some downtime at the hotel. We headed back out to the Biergarten for dinner. Afterward, we stopped at an ice cream shop for dessert, ending our day on another sweet note.

Day 13 - Bretzel Backen & Graduation

 6.28.23 On the 28th of June, we went with our group to a bakery, where we were taught by the owner of the bakery how to make pretzels. He taught us what the 5 ingredients (flour, butter, salt, water, and yeast) are that you have to use and also how to know when the dough has been mixed enough (the first sign is if the bowl is clean, the second sign is of the dough is smooth or soft, and if you can stretch the dough and make it translucent it is ready). After preparing the dough we rolled it out and then folded them into the shapes of pretzels. The shape may seem simple enough but it was a little confusing to replicate. The example that the baker gave us was so quick and practiced we all were stunned at how fast he made it. After we had made the shapes of all the pretzels it was time to glaze them in the next ingredient called Lie which is what hardens and turns the outside crust brown. Days 15, 16, & 17 - Weekend and Farewell Dinner

6.30.23 to 7.2.23 Friday and Saturday we had no school, which meant we could spend time with our families and friends. The previous days were not filled with much so it was decided to consolidate three days together and focus on the Farewell Dinner on July 2nd.  That Sunday, we spent our last full day in Stuttgart with our host family. Most of us spent the day washing and packing clothes while also joining our families in activities.  In the evening, we made our way to the vineyards for our farewell dinner. It was a beautiful setting at the house of one of the German exchange students. After having some food and sparkling water, we handed out “awards” to the host families and sang a few songs for them. We sang a German version of the song  “Country Roads” that we wrote and the German class favorite, “Schnappi.” It was a lot of fun and a great last evening together.

Arrival in Germany and Day 1

6.15.23 & 6.16.23 We arrived at Frankfurt Airport at 7 am German time on the 15th of June. After barely sleeping on the long 7-hour flight from Boston and the 1.5-hour commute from Frankfurt to Koblenz, our whole group was (to put it lightly) pretty beat. However, we pushed through the jet lag and had a wonderful day full of activities. After dropping our luggage off at the hotel, we set off to explore the Marketplatz filled with bustling people and busy shops. We then walked along the historical Rhine River where we saw the Deutsche Eck, also known as German Corner. It’s the corner of the land where the river Rein and Mosel combine. There is a massive statue of Wilhelm I on a horse there as well, and it weighs in at over 60 tons! After that, we took a gondola ride up to visit Ehrenbreitstein Fortress: a fort that overlooks part of the river.
